There is no dearth of youth power in India. Our country has the largest youth population in the world, and it is very important to channelize this energy in the right direction. But many times it happens that even after completing studies, the youth are not able to get employment. The reason? Lack of right skills. This is where the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) comes in, which is an initiative of the Government of India, which makes the youth skilled and prepares them for employment. Today we will talk about this scheme in detail, such as what it is, what is its objective, who can take advantage of it, and how it is being implemented.

What is PMKVY?

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, abbreviated as PMKVY, is an important scheme of the Government of India, which was launched on 15 July 2015 on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day. Its purpose is to provide training to the youth of the country according to the needs of the industries, so that they are able to get a job or start self-employment. This scheme is implemented by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).

Imagine how difficult it can be to get a job if you don’t have any skills. PMKVY has been created to solve this problem. This scheme has been started keeping in mind those youth who are less educated, have dropped out of school or college, or who do not have any special technical skills. This scheme not only provides training but also provides a certificate which is valid all over the country.

Objective of the scheme

The main objective of PMKVY is to prepare the youth of the country for employment. This scheme makes people skilled who could not complete their studies or who lack formal education. Its goal is that the youth can not only get a job but can also start their own business if they want. Apart from this, this scheme provides skills according to the needs of the industries, so that the trained youth are directly suitable for the job.

Let me give you an example. Suppose, there is a youth who left his studies after 10th. Now he is looking for a job, but without any special skills, he is not getting any good work. PMKVY can train him in fields like electrician, plumber, or digital marketing. After training, he gets a certificate, which increases his job prospects.

Who can take advantage of this?

Any Indian citizen between the ages of 18 and 35 can avail the benefits of PMKVY. This scheme is specially designed for those who are economically weaker, come from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Transgender, Divyang, or other marginalized communities. If you already have any skill, then you can certify your skill under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Some basic documents are required for this, such as:

  • Aadhar Card: This is necessary for your identification.
  • Residence Certificate: To show that you are a resident of India.
  • Educational Certificate: If you have any degree or certificate, it will have to be submitted.
  • Bank Account details: Because in some cases financial aid is given directly into your account.

Different Phases of PMKVY

PMKVY has been implemented in three phases so far, and now the fourth phase (PMKVY 4.0) is going to start soon. Let us understand these phases:

  • PMKVY 3.0 (2020-2021): The target was to train about 8 lakh youth in this phase. In this, the mission of self-reliant India was kept in mind and courses were designed according to local needs.
  • PMKVY 4.0 (2023 and beyond): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced PMKVY 4.0 in the 2023 budget. This phase will include courses in modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), coding, robotics, and 3D printing.
